Key dates for your classroom this May

There’s a lot happening in May to celebrate or raise awareness in your class. From the King’s Coronation to Walk To School Week and much more. Here’s a list of some of the most important May key dates for your classroom.

 1st – 7th – Deaf Awareness Week

With over 50,000 deaf children and young people in the U.K it is so important to raise awareness this week. Teach your pupils about how individuals with hearing difficulties might communicate and talk about the various levels of deafness. For more information about Deaf Awareness Week visit www.ndcs.org.uk/deaf-awareness-week.

5th – Space Day

A day dedicated to the never-ending and ever-expanding universe! Your curious-minded pupils will be excited to learn about all things space from the Big Bang to the first man on the moon.

6th – The King’s Coronation

The Coronation of King Charles means you can plan lots of exciting activities for your class. From designing crowns to making bunting to hang across the classroom.

9th – 12th – KS2 SATS Week

A very important week if you teach KS2 pupils. Some children may feel the pressure more than others, or be anxious about having to sit exams. Reassure your pupils that all they can do is their best and let them know they can talk to you about their concerns.

15th – 21st – Mental Health Awareness Week

Raising awareness around mental health will always be such a crucial topic in the classroom but use this week to re-emphasise what mental health is, what can affect it and the importance of talking to others when we feel different emotions. Mental Health Week also runs alongside Walk To School Week which makes it a great opportunity to merge the two events. For more information and activity ideas for Mental Health Awareness Week visit www.mentalhealth.org.uk.

16th – 20th – Walk To School Week

We all know that exercise combined with fresh air is one of the best ways to start the day. Use this week to have discussions with your class about how walking can benefit both our physical and mental health and encourage pupils to walk to school if they can. For younger pupils you can turn it into a game by giving them things to look out for on their journey to school. To find out more about Walk To School Week head over to www.livingstreets.org.uk.

17th – National Numeracy Day

There’s been a lot of talk in the news recently around the topic of Maths what with the PM wanting to introduce Maths to 18. For many pupils it probably isn’t their most favourite subject so how can we think of ways to make Maths more fun in the classroom this National Numeracy Day?!
